Third Annual Food Lab Conference

The third annual Food Lab Conference will be held on the Stony Brook Southampton Campus, beginning on Friday, June 9th, and concluding on Saturday, June 10th. This year’s theme will be “Food In America: Fifty years of change," and will feature Bobby Flay, David Barber, and Michel Nischan. The Food Lab conference brings together many of today's leaders in food business, media, and policy to discuss the path toward healthy regional food systems. The Amagansett Food Institute and Edible East End are partners in organizing the conference.

According to its mission statement, the Food Lab is "a center for education, enterprise and media incubating informed conversation, communication and business development under the umbrella of food, from farming to nutrition, from edible business to DIY tutorials." Learn more at http://thefoodlab.org/.

The conference is open to the public. Several vendors will have displays throughout the conference, including Carissa’s Breads, Kim’s Cookie Company, Backyard Brine, Quail Hill Farm, and other local producers. A variety of panels will run on Saturday and a gala dinner will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are on sale now at $150 per person. From now until the conference, tickets for students and farmers are $75 per person. For more information visit the website.

CRAFT - Garden of Eve Organic Farm/Cornell Cooperative Extension - Integrated Pest Management in a Greenhouse; Introduction to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for Beginning Farmers

Garden of Eve Organic Farm was founded in 2001 by Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht. The farm is one of the largest certified organic operations on the East End of Long Island. Chris and Eve are dedicated to providing delicious and diverse organic vegetables, fruits and beautiful flowers at the farm—with over 70 varieties of vegetables, 20 varieties of herbs, and 30 varieties of flowers. Eve and Chris will lead us on a tour of the farm and speak about their use of integrated pest management (IPM) within their greenhouse. Sandy Menasha from the Cornell Cooperative Extension will also provide an overview on updates to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for small farms on the East End.

We will have a potluck following the tour and Sandy’s discussion. Please bring a dish for 4-6 people or a drink to share!
