AFI’s Farm to Pantry program, in partnership with Long Island Cares, gives farmers an outlet for their surplus produce and pays them for it while at the same time providing hungry Long Islanders with fresh, healthy produce.
Every week during the growing season, AFI aggregates surplus produce for purchase by Long Island’s Food Bank, which then distributes it to 600 food pantries in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
In fall and winter, AFI works with local farms to deliver produce directly to local food pantries. These deliveries are especially important in the Hamptons, where jobs are scarce during off-season months. This portion of the program relies entirely on private donors and local support. Betwee 2013 and 2015, the program has accounted for more than 80,000 pounds of produce. We aim to continue to increase this number and work with more interested farmers.
